School, Condoms, and Lunch

In the schools I attended we were given neither condoms nor lunch. We were given a good education.

I find that the priorities of education have shifted to some degree, and schools are responsible for doing a whole lot more than just educating in the various content areas these days. (Then again, I argue that such might have always been the case as an intrinsic part of educating.)

Happy New Year, G. B.

Yes the priorities have shifted -- away from from what they ought to be. It is the responsibility of parents to feed their children, not the schools. We must resist the slide to the Nanny State -- with Hillary as Nanny in Chief.

I liked your comment in a previous post about anyone who needs to be taught how to use one of these implements should not be having sex in the first place (or something to that effect). Happy New Year to everyone.

As a kid, I used to build condos using an erector set. Is that what they're teaching in schools now?

Jeff,

Did you ever see the movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Revolta Travolta? Circa 1978. There was a funny scene in which the Travolta character gives a short fat chick in the back of a car a little envelope and the girl refers to the contents as a 'condominium.'

Ockham,

And a very happy New Year to you as well, sire. Whatever your drink of choice, enjoy it in moderation tomorrow night, and every night. Good parsimonious nominalist that you are, I trust you shall not multiply inebriation praeter necessitatem.

Bill, I never saw Saturday Night Fever. In those days, I literally had too little money to go to movies except for the cheap ones shown on campus -- so that movie probably didn't make it to Baylor's Baptist cinema...

These days, moderation - A film and a bottle of wine shared with the wife, then possibly Jools Holland's excellent New Year show.

Favourite tipple? Port or Madeira, very old-fashioned drinks. A good Malt - say Ardbeg, Lagavulin. Most types of wine, burgundy when i can afford it. And of course Kentish or Yorkshire bitter. I'm from Kent, where they used to (&I think still do) grow the hops to put in the beer.
