Advice for Comedians

The comedians of the present day would be out of work were they to follow the following advice of Francis Bacon in his essay "Of Discourse":

As for jest, there be certain things which ought to be privileged from it; namely, religion, matters of state, great persons, any man's present business of importance, and any case that deserveth pity; yet there be some that think their wits have been asleep, except they dart out somewhat that is piquant, and to the quick; that is a vein which would be bridled:

Parce, puer, stimulis, et fortius utere loris.
["Boy, spare the whip, and tightly grasp the reins." Ovid, Meta. 11. 127]

And, generally, men ought to find the difference between saltness and bitterness. Certainly, he that hath a satirical vein, as he maketh others afraid of his wit, so he had need be afraid of others' memory. (Bolding added.)

Decal of the Day: Back Off! I'm Grumpy

I spied this on the rear window of a beat-to-hell pickup truck. The Decal depicted the character Grumpy of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs fame. He seemed to be brandishing guns in the manner of that Yosemite Sam character one sometimes sees on mud flaps with the logo, "Back off." Can I squeeze any logico-philosophical mileage out of this? But of course.

The Logic of 'Publish or Perish'

I once saw a cartoon on a colleague’s door: Poor Poindexter published and published, but perished anyway.

What does ‘Publish or Perish’ mean? It means that if one does not publish, then one will perish career-wise. Statements of the form p v q are equivalent to statements of the form, ~p –-> q. But from ~p –-> q one cannot validly infer p –-> ~q. For example, if the toaster is unplugged, then it will not function does not entail if the toaster is plugged in, then it will function. Similarly, if Poindexter does not publish, then he will perish does not entail if Poindexter does publish, then he will not perish.

The Philosophy of Humor is No Joke

Tell a joke to a philosopher, and he is more likely to wonder what makes it funny than to laugh. So what does make a joke funny? Different things in different cases, no doubt. But the root of the risible in many cases would appear to be conceptual incoherence. Yogi Berra, asked what time it is, replied, “You mean now?” This is funny because Yogi’s response suggests that it could now be some other time than now – which is of course incoherent.
