The Donkey and the Elephant

A donkey runs toward a steep cliff at velocity v, an elephant at 1/2 v. Both die in the end, but the donkey dies sooner.

Conservative argues: The elephant’s behavior, though suboptimal, is better than the donkey’s. Since he is moving half as fast, he has more time to think and so more chance to slow down or stop before reaching the precipice.

Anarchist argues: There is nothing to choose between the two behaviors since both animals will die in the end.

Conservative principle: Don’t let the best become the enemy of the good!

Anarchist principle: All or nothing!

The Parable of the Tree and the House
A man planted a tree to shade his house from the desert sun. The tree, a palo verde, grew like a weed and was soon taller than the house. The house became envious, feeling diminished by the tree’s stature. The house said to the tree: "How dare you outstrip me, you who were once so puny! I towered above you, but you have made me small."
